Fine-Tuning Layout

As mentioned in a previous page, the overall sizes of lines, spaces between lines and spacing between parts may be altered to adjust the number of lines that fit within a page.

It is also possible to add new measures, time signatures etc. using the Structure toolbar:

Structure toolbar

This can be accessed by opening the Editing pane (either via View->Toolbars->Editing on the main menu, or by pressing the right pane button) and then pressing the Structure label on the Editing toolbar
Editing toolbar.

NB: It is advisable to add the bulk of any structure modifications before any notes are added!

If the score contains more than one part (instrument/voice), changes will apply to all other parts.

Bar lines: six buttons are used to change the existing barlines on the score.

Bar lines are added by selecting an appropriate item and clicking on the required position on the score. If it's an end type, click near the end of the bar and vice versa for a start type.

Tip: to clear a special barline (anything apart from a single line), drop the same type of barline on to itself. The special barline will become a single one. To clear any barline at the very beginning of a line (i.e. immediately after a clef and before any notes), drop the same barline on to itself.

The other buttons are:

add bar/measure: adds a new bar either before or after an existing bar. If start of an existing bar is clicked, the new bar will appear before the existing one. If the end is clicked, the new bar will be placed after the existing one.

remove bar/measure: click on the bar to remove it. If it contains notes, a warning will be issued. It can't be removed if it is the last remaining one on a line.

add line: adds a new line either before or after an existing line. If start of an existing line is clicked, the new line will appear before the existing one. If the end is clicked, the new line will be placed after the existing one.

remove line: click on the line to remove it. If it contains notes, a warning will be issued. It can't be removed if it is the last remaining one in the score.

add or replace time signature: click on the existing time signature to replace it. If there is no existing time signature, one will be added. The time signature applies to all bars up to the next one found, or until the end of the score, whichever is nearer. This also works backwards until the previous time signature or until the start of the score, whichever is nearer.

The default playback tempo of any  time signature is the tempo set on the main toolbar for a score.

However this may be changed for each time signature on the pop-up that appears when a time signature is dropped on to the stave from the Structure Toolbar.

You can display the pop-up at any time by dropping the time signature item again from the toolbar on to an existing one.

A time signature may be hidden, though it will still affect playback.

add or replace clef: click on the existing clef to replace it. If there is no existing clef, one will be added. This changes the clef for all measures used by an instrument.

add first timing section marker: click on the bar to contain the first timing marker. A screen will popup allowing you to specify how many bars are included in the first timing, counting from the '1' mark. The value defaults to the number before a repeat barline is reached, the end of section, the end of a score or the start of a second timing marker (whichever is reached soonest). The number displayed on the popup screen is maximum possible value. Values higher than this will be rejected.

Note: If the score is for bagpipe or chanter, clicking on a specific note allows a 'start note' to be selected. When the popup screen is displayed, a new item 'from note' will appear with a check beside it.

Pressing OK, with 'from note' checked, creates a new timing bracket starting from the chosen note.

NB: This extra option will only appear if the score is in bagpipe format and a note or grace note is clicked on after depressing the first timing marker button.

UPDATE: it is now possible to add timing section markers using perhaps a more intuitive method i.e. select the note(s) and press the first or second timing marker button. This is described in more detail on the
Flexible Timings page.

add second timing section marker: If there is no first timing marker, add this first, then add the second timing marker. To do this, click on the bar to contain the secSecond timing popup.ond timing marker.

The optional text is normally blank, but for display purposes, text may be put in this field. e.g. if 'of 2' is placed here, the marker will be labelled with '2 of 2'.
This has no affect on playback.

add Da Capo symbol: just click on the bar and this symbol will be added to align with the end of the bar. This is used during playback to set the playback to the start of the tune again.

add Fine symbol: just click on the bar and this symbol will be added to align with the end of the bar. This is used in conjunction with Da Capo during playback to indicate the end of the score after the tune is repeated from the beginning.

adjust barline position: click on the barline to move and drag it to either the left or right before releasing it. Any notes in the bar will be autospaced. NB: this button now 'latches' in so that  subsequent barlines can be adjusted without having to keep pressing this button every time a line is moved. Unlatch it by pressing this button again or by pressing the Escape key on your keyboard.

Lead-in bar. add a lead-in/pick-up bar (anacrusis): click on this button and then click on the 1st line of the part and an introductory bar will be placed at the very start of the part and will be sized smaller than the others on the line. NB: it is essential that an appropriate repeat barline is put in the correct place for anacrusis to work as expected on playback.
